Digitalisation and automation have become a daily reality to nearly all businesses. Hybrid working is now commonplace, and the tight labour market is driving companies to seek greater efficiency through digital technology. In today's environment, expanding without automation seems nearly impossible. Despite its crucial role, many essential digitalisation processes still face significant challenges. According to Prof. Dr. Karlien Vanderheyden from Vlerick and Philippe Miossec, Change Management Lead for Quality 4.0 at GSK, the success of digital transformation hinges on trust in technology. Achieving this trust demands transparent, flexible, and reliable systems, supported by an experienced partner. Both experts emphasised these points during a lecture at the Vlerick HR Day on 14 June where Syntegro was a Diamond Sponsor.

Employee confidence in technology is crucial for succesful digital transformation!

The challenge in digital transformation

"If employees do not have confidence in the technology you want to implement, they will use it inadequately, incorrectly or not at all." (Prof. Dr. Karlien Vanderheyden)

Although the possibilities of digital technology are increasing exponentially, the road to successful digital transformation is often littered with obstacles for many organisations. Prof. Dr. Karlien Vanderheyden states that 85% of companies were already undergoing a digital transformation process. 75% of them failed. This failure, according to Professor Vanderheyden, can in many cases be traced back to a lack of trust in digital technology.

Because if employees do not trust the technology, they will also use it inadequately, incorrectly or not at all. Consequently, the hoped-for process optimisation fails to materialise and costs increase.

How can you create trust in technology?

"Trust is created with transparency, thorough understanding through support and training, reliable measurements, objective data and flexible software." (Philippe Miossec)

According to Vanderheyden, trust in technology is the result of a dynamic interaction between the system, the people and the context in which the system is implemented. Philippe Miossec also stresses the importance of trust between humans and technology, stating that trust depends on both human and technological factors.

Human factors such as experience with technology, expectations and personality traits play an important role, he says. On the technology side, data quality matters, as do transparency, errors in system operation, efficiency, adaptability and duration of interaction with technology. His advice is therefore: create transparency, build thorough understanding through support and training, provide reliable measurements and objective data, and offer flexible software.
